*Bridge for Beginners - Tuesdays in March

1 -3 p.m., Community Room

Bridge is a trick-taking card game of skill and chance. It is played by four players who form two partnerships; the partners sit opposite each other at a table. The game consists of the auction (often called bidding) and play, after which the hand is scored. Space is limited



*Internet Travel - Thursday, March 4

9 - 10:30 a.m., Roos Classroom

Fee: $6 per person

Would you like to be your own travel agent? Do you have a computer with an internet connection? If so, you can learn how to set up reservations and make all of your plans online. This class is designed to help show you various Web sites that will help you book flights, hotels, and rental cars all from the convenience of your own computer. This session will be filled with tips, helpful links, and information to get you started on finding some great travel deals online.



*How to Stay Safe on the Internet & Keeping Your PC Up-to-Date - Tuesday, March 16

Join Herschell for instructions on how to avoid virus, malware and Trojan infected sites; staying safe using e-mail accounts; making sure virus scan information is current and activated; showing how to obtain free cleaning, virus and spyware software to protect your PC; showing how to rid your PC's of un-wanted programs; showing how to set PC's to auto update and download the latest fixes and patches from Microsoft and Windows official sites.


*Facebook for Beginners - Thursday, March 18

Are you interested in learning how to use Facebook? This Web site can connect you to family and friends. You must have an active email address in order to participate in this class. You will learn how to create an account, update personal information, request other Facebook users, send messages, and post pictures.

Classes

Mah-Jongg for Beginners - Tuesdays
12:30 - 3 p.m., Davis Classroom
Individual or group lessons will be provided by a member of the Mah-Jongg group. If you have taken lessons and want to perfect your game, come and play at the Learner's Table with others who have little or no experience with the game. You can learn and watch until you feel proficient enough to join a regular game table. A seasoned player will always play at the Learner's Table.

*Cell Phone 101 - Second Tuesday of each month
10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.., Roos Classroom
Does the thought of text messaging intimidate you? Would you like to learn how to quick dial your friends and family? We will give you personal instruction on this new wave of communication. If you are unsure if your phone is set up for text messaging, please contact your cell phone provider. Please bring your phone instruction manual with you. By appointment only

*Pinochle for Beginners - Tuesdays in February
1 -3 p.m., Community Room
Pinochle is a trick-taking game typically for two, three or four players and played with a 48 card deck. Derived from the card game bezique, players score points by trick-taking and also by forming combinations of cards into melds. Each hand is played in three phases: bidding, melds, and tricks. Space is limited

*Digital Photography: Taking Pictures - Tuesday, February 2
Noon - 3 p.m., Roos Classroom
Fee: $12 per person

This class is for the first time digital camera owner. We will practice taking pictures and review basics for a good composition including basic camera operation, lighting, zooming in, landscapes, people, etc. Bring your camera and be ready to take that shot! We will be working inside and outside of the building. Space is limited

Are you aware of all of the information you can find on the Internet? It can be used as a resource for news, weather, and sports, but there is so much more you can find. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, phone books ... you name it! In this class, we will look at some of the simple things you can do such as create an e-mail address, online shopping, and look up information. This class is perfect for someone who is very new to the Internet or for someone who has never used it. Space is limited

*Digital Photography for Beginners -

Fee: $25 per person for the three-week session

In this class we will learn the steps on how to download pictures from your digital camera onto a personal computer (PC). We will work with and create folders on the desktop and in drives. We will discuss folder organization, how to sign-on to your Internet email account, attach pictures to emails, and upload pictures to the Internet. Also, we will import pictures into documents and download pictures to the computer and work with Picasa software. Space is limited

Cultural Event Tours-Feb/March

Cultural Events - Join us as we tour a place of interest on the second Thursday of each month. We will be departing from the Turner Center Lobby at the time stated. The price is noted next to each destination. Space is limited

February 11 @ 12:45 p.m. - Grounds Tour at Belle Meade Plantation
($12 per person with free wine tasting)
March 11 @ 8:45 a.m. - Bluebird Cafe ($4 per person)

*Theater - Join the Theater Group as they attend several shows throughout the year at a variety of venues. Please check the bulletin board in the Turner Center Lobby for up to date information. We will only be using the Turner Center van for these trips unless otherwise noted. Space is limited

Blithe Spirit
The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages offers up the story of fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine. Widower Charles is remarried to Ruth, but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira who is summoned from the spirit world by a visiting 'happy medium' Madame Arcati. This Noel Coward classic is as light and frothy as meringue!
Chaffin's Barn
Drive on your own; Doors open @ 11 a.m.
Show begins @ noon
$20 per person
This is a "Brown Bag" matinee, which means no food will be served by Chaffin's Barn, but you are welcome to bring your own prepared food to this show.

(Due to the popularity of the Symphony trips, we are implementing a new registration format. We will allow the first 25 people interested to sign-up. We will pull numbers from a hat and contact those people selected. The selected members have until the end of the week to make their payment. If someone does not pay on time, another number will be selected and that member will be asked to participate on this trip.)

Fee: $11 per person

Fifty Forward's Feb. Events

*Lunch Bunch - First Friday of each month
Fee: $4 per person with lunch on your own
On the first Friday of each month, we will use our van to travel to a local restaurant. We will be leaving the Turner Center Lobby promptly at the time indicated below. Space is limited

February 5 @ 10:15 a.m.- Second Harvest Food Bank
We will be volunteering for an hour before our lunch. Please dress comfortably and do not wear open toed shoes. There will be no fee for the van as this is a volunteer opportunity. There will be a $12 cash lunch buffet at the First Harvest Cafe with all proceeds going to Second Harvest Food Bank.
March 5 @ 10:30 a.m. - McCreary's Irish Pub

*Social: Bingo Bash - Second Monday of each month
Noon, Community Room
Join us for a few games of Bingo each month. There is plenty of fun to be had at these events. There will be a grand prize given away to the member that wins the "cover all" Bingo game. Space is limited

*Social: L-O-V-E Scavenger Hunt - Monday, February 15
Noon, Community Room
What is the Wikipedia definition of love? Which staff member is wearing a heart on their sleeve? Team up with another member to complete the L-O-V-E Scavenger Hunt in honor of Valentine's Day. Each team has one hour to complete the challenge. While awaiting the results, enjoy some tasty treats courtesy of Homewood Residence. The team with the most correct answers will be awarded a prize. Hosted by the Social Committee; space is limited

*Spelling Bee - Wednesday, February 24
Noon, Community Room
Would you like to participate in our spelling bee? This event is designed to be fun and to act as a stimulant for aging brains, but it also brings out a serious competitive streak. We will use a team approach as they will use paper and pen to come up with the correct word. If you prefer to not participate, we welcome you to come show your support for your fellow members. Space is limited

World Wide Knit-in Public Day on Sat. June 13th



WWKiP Day, the largest knitter-run event in the world, will be celebrated this year at Middle Tennessee area Panera Bread locations. Sponsored by Knit and Crochet TN, the organizers invite both knitters and crocheters to come and stitch from 9 am – 12 noon while enjoying free coffee and sweets provided by Panera Bread. No reservations are necessary. Knit and Crocket TN is a group of needle workers who are dedicated to providing knitters and crocheters of Tennessee with information on area groups, special events, educational opportunities and charitable needs in our community.
